I am going to claim this decluttering book as my favourite...and the most successful in my experience. Marie Kondo is a Japanese tidying consultant and author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying up. There are a few things that make her book a stand out, offering a new slant on the topic of clearing out ones possessions. 1. Marie Kondo has a refreshing, quirky writing style and self awareness that I really enjoy. 2. Instead of working through possessions room by room as is often the case, her focus is on categories. She teaches how to go through each category.... once and for all. She claims if people use her method they will never have to declutter again! She starts with clothes, followed by books, working through subjects one by one, gathering all like items together in one place. If you live with other people, she advises not to declutter other peoples possessions until you've completed your own. It makes sense that this can be a way to avoid having to deal with your own things. 3. She approaches each object, every single one, by holding it and determining whether it sparks joy :-) Of course, some things don't spark joy, like a toaster or whatever, but it is useful and she has a way of dealing with these too which makes me smile :-) Drawbacks to the book...I would say that the second to last category, 'Miscellaneous Household items' is too broad for a family. I have had to break this category down in to many bite size categories so I can continue working methodically through the book. Marie Kondo says that the longest time that any client of hers has ever taken to declutter their home, once and for all, is 6 months. (Probably a mum, hehe) I am well on track, starting late January/early February I think. Check it out at your local library if you're interested. xx
